You run through each level blasting all that gets in your way using your standard gun with unlimited ammo! You also get upgrades that increase the rate of fire, gives you lasers and flame throwers and of course who can forget the spread gun? When you and your friend had this deadly weapon, alien forces watch out! Annihilation ensues! The stages vary a bit to give you a different experience each time as you have your horizontal moving levels, vertical levels and the strange 3-D type forward moving stages. This one has you as one of two military tough guys, one nicknamed Mad Dog and one Scorpion as you traverse jungle terrain, futuristic bases and the innards of a very large and very unfriendly looking alien battling the forces of the Red Falcon, whose name really did not make much sense as the alien looked nothing like a falcon, but I guess that is just nitpicking on my part. I also liked the original Mario Brothers too, as that one was rather fun to play with a friend as well. Better than that one that was an over the top view and you could get into a tank, forgot the name of that one, but this one I could never forget. Other Differences All other version differences are graphical and as best as we've tested do not affect gameplay. This game was one of my favorite games to team up and challenge an awesome military force. This is where the stage number and your score is displayed. version has a hard limit of 225 frames between each stage. Assuming you pressed the start button twice at the precise moments, you can advance to the next stage in 11 frames in the Japanese version. Both of these screens may be skipped instantly by pressing the start button. In the Japanese version, there is a cutscene for each stage and then the stage is shown on a map. Version: 225 frames to skip to the next stage Japanese Version: As few as 11 frames to skip to the next stage This is due to the way that the Japanese version handles stage transitions screns. Runs done on the Japanese version of Contra can save a significant amount of time over runs done on the U.S. Timings for the flames in stage 6 and claws in stage 7 If you don't press the B button repeatedly at the right frequency the smaller waves will go offscreen and you'll get the broader waves of 5. Keep repeating the process to get a straight stream of spread. You have 1/60th of a second to press the B button to get another wave off before the rest of the shots hit the wall. If a shot hits an enemy or another object those enemy'the collision happens before the other shots hit the wall. Shots will usually disappear at the same time because they all hit the wall at the end of the hallway at the same time.

The process is the same for base stages, but it's much harder. The idea is that by rhythmic shooting you can get the "waves" of spread to shift into a straight stream. The directions the shots go depend on how big the "wave" is, but it always has a shot going straight. Let's say that you then had 8 shots on the screen, the next time you fire you get a "wave" of 2 shots and so on. The game will let you fire another "wave" of spread, but it can't go above 10 so you get a "wave" of 3 spread shots.

You've got have 7 shots on the screen so you're below the 10 limit.

Let's say that three shots have left the screen before the other shots did. Press B twice and you'll usually end up with 10 shots on the screen - two waves of 5 shots. With the spread gun, you can have up to ten shots on the screen at once (and 16 shots at once with two players). You also lose a frame of forward momentum when you land when you walk off an edge. When you jump you lose a frame of forward momentum.
